A significant property of living organisms is their struggle to reduce entropy, i.e. the organism increases its organization through metabolism and synthesis. The organism feeds on negative entropy.

Organization requires information. The possibility of information lies in the capacity to recognize patterns of distribution. Organisms develop receptors to measure certain properties of distribution such as pressure or heat. Men recognize divisions and relations whereas more primitive organisms register only individual events. Man has reacted to the pattern of sensory perception with the development of language. The possibility of employing the symbolic system of language is based on the ability to recognize patterns and to refer the distribution of individual events to a general context.
