A. Koestler called probability theory a child of the paradox wedded with mathematics and it is to computertechnology that we are indebted for this alliance. In spite of the slow and tortuous recognition of chance in the sciences the study the complex dynamic of chance seems to be a key to the foundations of our understanding of the world. So-called chaos obviously takes on a new meaning in this context. Even though chaos had been in ill repute it is complementary to order. Chaos or order depends on the observational framework selected. By the same token, to decode cryptic, seemingly chaotic information all one needs is the right observational frame.
